There were only three private Canadian M&A deals
reported in October. Two of these were
strategic acquisitions involving solely Ontario-based companies while the other
deal involved a NY-based financial buyer acquiring an Ontario-based division of
a public company headquartered in

We came across six private Canadian M&A deals this
September, which is two more deals than in August but four fewer than the ten
deals we reported in September of 2009.
Five of the deals were cross-border transactions – two involving a
financial buyer and three involving a strategic acquisition. The only all-Canadian acquisition was that of
a successful Ottawa-based burger chain by an

Things were quiet this month on the private M&A front;
we saw only four transactions. Despite
the scarcity of activity, it was good to see exits by three Canadian software

There were six private M&A deals reported in May. Three of the announcements were cross-border
transactions involving one Canadian buyer and two Canadian targets. One of the Canadian targets was lucky enough
to accomplish what so many technology startups predict that they will do when
they’re out raising money, they sold to Google. The other four Canadian companies acquired in
May were all service providers. Overall,
only two of the six acquisitions were made by financial buyers.

April. A lot of the activity involved

There were 13 M&A deals reported in March. Four of the announcements involved a cross-border transaction – half of which had the Canadian company as the target. Only three of the deals involved financial buyers as the headlines were dominated by strategic acquirers. Overall, the buyers snapped up six service businesses, four technology companies, a men’s clothing company, a local search publisher, and a national lottery. The busiest province was definitely

In February, there were eight acquisitions of private
companies that involved a private Canadian entity on at least one end of the
transaction. This total represents an
increase from the four transactions we reported in February 2009, but slightly
lower than the 11 transactions reported last month. None of the buyers came from the private
equity sector - the headlines were dominated by strategic buyers. Four of the eight deals were cross-border
transactions and only one of these international deals involved a Canadian
buyer. This means that in total there
were seven Canadian companies acquired in February. Three of the Canadian companies that were
bought are in the technology sector while the other four consisted of....

during December with four of these involving TSX-traded companies acquiring a
private Canadian company. The only
cross-border transaction involved a private, Canada-based acquirer taking over
a none-core asset of a large, US-based company.
