In a month that was very quiet in terms of financing activity we did see considerable M&A deal flow. The 12 transactions that occurred in November represent the highest total we have reported since December of 2007. September was a relatively busy month in terms of M&A deal flow. Eight of the 10 transactions this month were of the cross border variety. Among these, there were three headlines involving the private equity arms of large Canadian pension funds, as well as a transaction where two traditional Canadian PE shops acquired an Ontario-based manufacturer of custom garments. The other Canadian-based acquisition targets this month were comprised of three technology companies, a specialty retailer and a financially distressed manufacturer of anti-terrorism equipment.

This July we came across four private M&A deals. None of the deals this month involved a direct purchase by a private equity group, although one of the foreign acquirers, Barcelona-based Applus, is backed by several private equity sponsors. In July there were seven notable private M&A announcements but only six of them were new transactions as one of the deals reported this month pertained to a transaction that actually closed in late 2008. Among the seven target companies making the news last month there were three technology companies, two manufacturing businesses, one service company and a fund manager.

In March, we saw nine notable M&A deals involving private Canadian companies. It was a relatively eventful month when compared to the four transactions we reported in February and the three deals that were completed in January. Three of the transactions took place in the technology space. There were also two transactions in the oil & gas space and three acquisitions by a large PE-backed company consolidating the transport/logistics industry. In total, there were four private equity- backed buyouts and they all involved US sponsors.

It was a very quiet month on the M&A front with only three reported transactions involving private Canadian companies. All of the deals this month involved US-based public companies, two of which were acquirers and one of which was a target. None of January’s deals involved direct acquisitions by private equity shops, although one of the buyers was backed by Falconhead Capital.
