Canadian and cross border M&A activity was light in October relative to previous months.

 

Stephen Hurwitz, from Boston law firm Choate Hall & Stewart LLP positioned: "It absolutely makes no sense because each year Canada indirectly or directly invests $8 billion to $9 billion in research and development. Research and development creates ideas ... so what happens to those ideas if there is no capital to commercialize them? It means most of the $9 billion is lost.  Canadian venture companies then get bought cheap by U.S. investors and the $9 billion becomes a subsidy for a U.S. buyer."  Christian Racicot, president and co-founder of the North American Venture Capital Summit, proposes that U.S. funds should not buy-up Canadian companies, but rather become partners and help them through the key stages of their development.

Several cross-border transactions took place involving a private Canadian company being acquired by a U.S. firm PE player.  Also, Canadian private equity firm Tricor Pacific Capital Inc. led M&A activity north of the boarder as it acted as the acquirer in two transactions.

June was another hot month for Canadian M&A activity.  Canadian PE groups took the lead on several cross-border transactions, acquiring majority stakes in large U.S. and British companies.  This month’s biggest move was made by Canadian conglomerate Brookfield Asset Management, who extended a $6.5 billion cash bid to Australian Multiplex Group and its affiliated holdings.  The deal is only the latest in a string of recent purchases being made by the large Canadian buyout groups.
