Twelve private Canadian companies reported receiving capital during November with eight of the companies reporting a total of $179.25 million in new capital. Notably, more than 50% of that capital went to one company, a BC-based business that provides helicopter services. These results are relatively similar to the nine deals and $152.4 million raised last November, but a significant improvement on the two deals and $2.4 million reported at this time in 2009. Seven of the 12 companies raising money were…

17 private Canadian companies reported raising capital in October, one of the companies did not disclose how much capital was raised, but the remaining 16 reported that they receive a total of $115.1 million. Very good numbers when you consider the fact that this time last year, we only came across three deals and $4.0 million in reported financing amounts. The total number of deals this October lags only behind May, when we reported 22 deals, in terms of the highest deal totals of 2011. It also marks the fourth time in 2011 that we have reported more than 14 deals in one month, something that we did not do a single time in 2009 or 2010. 11 of the companies raising money this October are...

Deal flow slowed down a little bit from the 22 transactions we came
across in May but it was nonetheless a decent month on the financing front - there
were 11 deals announced in June. Nine of
the deal reports included the amount of money that was raised through the deal,
with these nine transactions bringing in a total of $116.6 million. The numbers were a lot more encouraging than
the four deals and $37.2 million reported this time last year. Of the 11 companies raising capital this
month, five operate in the ICT sector and three are manufacturers. The remaining three businesses include a
cleantech company, a newly formed player in the oil and gas sector, and a
pharmaceutical developer. The ICT
companies raised a total of $27.2 million.
Most of the activity this June took place in Ontario,
where we came across...

There were 25 deals announced in May 2011; three of the announcements did not disclose the amount of capital raised but we know that the other 22 companies raised a total of $85.8 million. The total number of deals was larger than what we usually report as a result of 12 small deals that were financed by an investment partnership whose mandate is to secure jobs for Quebecers, primarily by investing in traditional businesses.
This May’s total compared favorably to the nine deals and $42.5 million reported in April and the 14 deals and $84.7 million reported in May 2010. In total, there were…

There were nine financings reported this April; eight of companies disclosed the size of the transaction, adding up to $538.15 million in capital. However, with subtracting the two oil and gas financings, the total amount of capital reported in the remaining six deals is only $41.15 million. The number of deals and dollar value totals are lower than our adjusted total from March, which was 10 deals and $72 million, as well as our totals from January and February of this year. This time last year we came across five transactions and $52.5 million in reported capital. In total, there were four transactions reported in Alberta, including the two oil and gas deals, two in British Columbia, and one in each of Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Five of the companies receiving capital were...
March 2011Private Equity - March 2011

There were 15 transactions reported during March with eleven of them disclosing the amount of capital that was raised, totaling $305 million in funding. However, $183 million of that amount went to two transactions in the energy space, a renewable energy plant which raised $143 million and an oil sands developer that raised $40 million. Once we adjust for these two transactions, we find that March represented a nice increase when compared to the 10 deals and $70 million in new capital reported during February 2011 and the 12 deals and $65.9 million announced in March of 2010. But it should be noted that…

During the month of February we identified ten reported transactions; this deal flow was very similar to the totals we observed over the three prior months as well as last February when we reported nine transactions. Of the ten announcements last month, only seven divulged the amount of capital raised, which added up to $70.1 million in new money. All of the deals were done in either Ontario or Quebec, which reported six and four transactions, respectively. Seven of the transactions involved technology companies while the remaining three took place in the cleantech, industrial, and biotech sectors. Of the three investments that Canadian funds made south of the border, two involved...

There were ten deals announced in January 2011, eight of which disclosed the actual amount of money raised, adding up to $40 million in new capital. The dollar figure amounts to a material decline from the $75.6 million in new capital reported in January 2010 and the $76.3 million reported in January of 2009, both of which involved eight transactions. Four of the January financings took place in Quebec, three in Ontario, two in Newfoundland, and one originating out of British Columbia. All of the deals, with the exception of two of the Ontario transactions, involved companies in the information technology space. The two Ontario-based exceptions included a biomedical development firm and a Clean Tech company. The two announcements involving Canadian players investing in US companies also took place in the IT space.

Eight private Canadian companies reported raising new capital in December. Seven of the announcements disclosed the amount of money invested, adding up to $115.2 in capital – although $75 million of that came by virtue of one financing in the clean energy sector. December’s totals are a slight decrease from the nine deals and $152.4 million reported in November, and reasonably close to the seven deals and $98.63 million in investments reported in December 2009.

Nine private Canadian companies reported raising capital in November, seven of which disclosed the amount of capital they received, totaling $152.4 million. This was a significant improvement over the three transactions that raised a total of $4 million last month and the two transactions and $2.4 million in financing reported in November of 2009. Nonetheless, the $152.4 million figure was largely the result of a $105 million financing for a waste management services company. This transaction, as well as two other deals, was completed by a US-based fund. Most of the financings in November took place in Ontario and Quebec, with four transactions each; the ninth deal took place in Alberta. Four of the Canadian companies that received capital were in the information technology space. There were two deals involving a Canadian fund investing in a US-based entity, both of which were carried out by MMV Financial.
