When compared to data from a year ago, March 2008’s total of 10 reported deals valued at $53 million is significantly lower than March 2007’s reported 14 closed deals valued at $266 million. Of the 10 Canadian companies that reported receiving financing in March, Ontario led the way with 8 reported deals each, while British Columbia and Alberta-based companies each completed a deal.

When compared to data from a year ago, February 2008’s totals of 10 reported deals valued at $361 million is significantly higher than February 2007’s reported 10 closed deals valued at $92 million. However, this large difference can be attributed to Canbriam Energy Inc.’s completion of a $300 million equity financing, which accounted for over 80% of February ’08s financing total. Of the 10 Canadian companies that reported receiving financing in February, Ontario and Quebec-based companies led the way with 3 reported deals each, while British Columbia and Alberta-based companies each completed 2 deals.
The Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association reported that venture capital investment across Canada in 2007 amounted to $2.1 billion, which is an increase of 21% from the $1.7 billion invested in 2006. Rick Nathan, President of the CVCA and Managing Director of Kensington Capital Partners Ltd. says, “Virtually all of the growth in our markets has been driven by the increased investments made by U.S. venture firms extending their reach into Canada, demonstrating the high quality of opportunities in our market and a complete absence of growth among our domestic firms. This is particularly evident in Ontario, where U.S. investors now represent a majority of all venture investment dollars – a historic high and roughly double their traditional market share.”

When compared to data from a year ago, January 2008’s totals of 12 reported deals valued at $99.34 million is significantly lower than January 2007’s reported 17 closed deals valued at $195 million. The 12 Canadian companies that reported receiving financing in early 2008 is an increase from December 2007’s total of 9, however the aggregate value of the financings decreased by $13.3 million to $99.34 million.
In terms of January’s provincial deal dispersions, Ontario-based companies led the way with 6 reported deals, British Columbia and Quebec-based companies completed 3 and 2 deals respectively, and a Nova Scotia-based technology company reported a closed deal.

For the second year in a row, December was a relatively slow month in terms of reported Canadian venture capital investments. While the nine publicly reported transactions totaling $112.6 million exceeded the December 2006 figure of $60 million invested in 14 companies, it’s still a significant decline from December 2005’s $222 million invested in 34 companies. In effect, what we are experiencing is the second year of a changed pattern in Canadian VC investing where year-end results are no longer positively impacted by the Labor Sponsored funds rushing to close transactions to meet pacing rules.
In terms of December’s provincial deal dispersions, Ontario-based companies led the way with 7 reported deals, while Quebec and British Columbia lagged behind with 1 deal each.

The number of completed PE and VC deals in September rose to 18, up from August’s total of 15. When compared to September 2006’s total of 17 closed deals valued at $156 million, September 2007 outperformed previous year’s totals by a substantial $78 million. The pharmaceutical and therapeutics space continues to outperform other sectors in attracting funding with a Quebec-based therapeutics company receiving $40.1 million in financing. In terms of provincial deal dispersions, Ontario-based companies led the way with 9 completed deals, followed by Quebec with 5, while British Columbia, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia closed one deal each. MMV Financial led all venture firms, in terms of activity, by financing 4 venture loans for Canadian and U.S. companies totaling US$7 million.
