M&A Activity Trends Higher Despite Growing Economic Concerns

M&A sources that we follow have all reported that the second quarter of 2010 was a strong one for technology deals in the U.S. with both the number of transactions and the value of transactions improving markedly. Depending on the source, deal volume increased on a year-over-year basis by between 12% and 24% while deal value increased between 27% and 43%. While the difference between the reported sources is significant, the trend from all sources is definitely upwards, which is very positive given the current state of uncertainty in the US and concerns over another economic slowdown or recession. Private Equity - July 2010

There were 12 private Canadian company financings announced in July.  Ten of the press releases reported the actual amount of money being put into the companies – adding up to $438 million in new capital.  However, we feel that it would be inappropriate to compare these totals to the figures that we have reported in previous newsletters due to the fact that $360 million of the $438 million figure came from two large transactions that do not fall under the categories that we have traditionally focused on in our newsletter.

Things were quiet this month on the private M&A front; we saw only four transactions.  Despite the scarcity of activity, it was good to see exits by three Canadian software companies.  The fourth Canadian company acquired this July is based in Toronto and develops high-tech precision equipment for clinical researchers.

Cross Border Activity - June 2009

There were no cross border financings this month as US VCs continued to shy away from investing north of the border.  Over the last three months there has only been one instance of a Canadian company receiving backing from a US-based VC fund.  On the bright side, we did see a couple of US-based companies coming to Canada to make strategic acquisitions in the technology space.
